Vinson Massif

At 6:00 pm on January 16th, we successfully reached the summit of Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica at an altitude of 4,892 meters, which is also the last of the Seven Summits to be climbed. The weather was extremely harsh with temperatures below -35 degrees Celsius, strong winds, and heavy snowfall.

Antarctica is a remote continent with 98% of its surface covered by ice sheets. The air is extremely thin and dry, and coupled with the low temperatures and strong winds, made it extremely difficult to climb. We had to carry a load of 20 kilograms and wear a rope around our waist, adding an additional 30 kilograms, to navigate the 40-60 degree slopes covered with ice and snow.

Normally, climbing Mount Vinson takes at least 8 days, but this time our window of opportunity was very short. We were stuck in Union Glacier for five days due to bad weather and couldn’t fly to base camp. So, once we arrived, we only had one chance to climb the mountain within a 3-day window. We couldn’t afford to acclimate to the altitude as we didn’t have time. Delaying even one more day would mean facing temperatures below -60 degrees Celsius at the summit. Therefore, we had to ascend at least 1000 meters every day for 7 to 11 hours carrying a heavy load. On the summit day, we couldn’t use the bathroom for 11 hours, but we had to drink plenty of water despite the high altitude and thickening blood….
